Why Leather Remains the Benchmark on Construction Sites
We regularly hear purchasing managers tell us they've tried synthetic versions (ballistic nylon, reinforced polyester, treated canvas) for their teams. Most of the time, after six months, they call us back. Not necessarily because synthetic materials are bad in themselves, but because in an intensive construction context, the lifespan/cost ratio always ends up favouring leather.
A bricklayer who works five days a week with a €15 synthetic nail pouch: at best, it lasts a year. Often less. The loops give out first, then the seams detach due to humidity and sweat. A properly constructed thick leather pouch lasts five to ten years. The math is simple. And that's not marketing; it's what we've observed in the field for decades.
The Question of Thick Leather for Construction
Not everyone uses the same leather. There's a considerable difference between 1.2 mm saddlery leather and 4 mm saddlery leather. For construction, we don't go below 3 mm for parts exposed to friction and impact. Below that, rivets tear out, concrete edges cut the edges, and humidity eventually deforms the piece irreversibly.
Our construction nail pouches are made from 3 to 4 mm full-grain leather, with vegetable or combined tanning depending on use. Vegetable tanning is stiffer; it returns to its shape after compression, which is very useful for pouches exposed to rain. Combined tanning offers more flexibility for belts worn for long periods. This isn't an arbitrary choice: we've established it based on feedback from artisans who wear these pieces every day.
Stitching: Where Everything Happens
A well-designed construction equipment piece is, first and foremost, stitching that doesn't give way. In the textile industry, we talk about heat-sealed seams, ultrasonic welding: quick, effective techniques for light loads. But on a pouch containing 800 grams of hexagonal-head nails, these assemblies don't hold up. We always come back to saddle stitching: two needles, two waxed linen threads, an independent stitch. If one thread breaks, the other holds. It's a technique that dates back to the 17th century and has yet to be surpassed for applications under tension.
Our saddlery pieces for construction are made with saddle stitching using 0.8 mm waxed linen thread, sometimes 1 mm for the most stressed areas: belt loops, pocket corners, hammer holder attachments. It's not faster than an industrial sewing machine, but it's incomparably stronger.
Fall Protection Harnesses: Safety First
Construction is the sector with the highest number of accidents related to working at height in France. Falls from height represent a significant portion of fatal construction accidents. This isn't an abstract statistic. It's why fall protection harnesses are mandatory when working at heights of more than 3 meters without adequate collective protection.
Our harnesses comply with standard EN 361, which sets the maximum impact load at 6 kN. This means that in the event of a fall, the complete system (harness + lanyard with absorber) must not transmit more than 6,000 newtons to the operator's body. The energy absorber (EN 355 standard) plays a crucial role here: it tears in a controlled manner to extend deceleration. Without it, even a perfectly adjusted harness can cause internal injuries when the fall is arrested.
A point we systematically emphasize with site managers: a harness must be visually inspected before each use. Seams, buckles, straps, attachment points. And discarded after any fall impact, even if no visible damage is observed. The webbing resin can be micro-cracked without it being visible. This is a rule, not a recommendation, a regulatory obligation.
The Tool Belt: A Tool in Itself
The ergonomics of a tool belt are often underestimated. A bricklayer who carries his tools on a poorly constructed belt (too narrow, slipping buckle, plastic loops) ends up with lower back pain at the end of the day. Width matters: 80 mm distributes the load much more comfortably than a 50 mm belt. Buckle retention also: stainless steel, no plastic, no cheap brass.
For lifting and cladding teams, tool holders can also be integrated directly into a configuration with an EN 358 work positioning belt. This creates a coherent system: work positioning (to work leaning without risk of tipping) and tool storage at the same level. Two pieces of equipment, one well-designed belt.
Custom Manufacturing for Construction Companies
We regularly work with construction companies that have specific needs: a pouch configured for specific types of screws, a belt with more loops on the right side, a tool holder adapted to a particular brand of glue gun. We do all of that. The standard lead time for a series of 10 to 50 pieces is 2 to 3 weeks after pattern validation.
We can also brand the equipment: embroidery, embossing the company name or logo on the belt or pouch. This is useful for sites where multiple teams share space and tools tend to travel.
What we don't do: low-cost to fill a tender. We have real manufacturing costs, salaries for leather workers and saddlers paid in Paris, leathers purchased from French and European tanners. We cannot match the prices of imported products. But we can guarantee that the delivered piece will always be the one we discussed. Not an approximation from a catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions: Construction & Lifting
What leather thickness for a nail pouch on a construction site?We recommend a minimum of 3 mm for intensive use. Below that, the leather yields to rivets and sharp tool edges. Our construction pouches are made from 3 to 4 mm depending on the range.
Are SASSI harnesses certified for lifting? Our fall protection harnesses comply with standard EN 361 and EU Regulation 2016/425. For lifting configurations with lateral positioning, we offer harnesses with lateral attachment points compliant with EN 358.
Can we order custom tool belts for a team?Yes, we make series starting from 5 pieces: width, number of loops, specific fastenings, company branding. Lead time 2–3 weeks depending on volume.
